Last week an estimated 265,000 gallons of liquid nitrogen fertilizer leaked from a farmers cooperative in Red Oak, Iowa, into the East Nishnabotna River. Since the leak was discovered the threat to water wildlife has extended into Missouri. Both the Iowa department of natural resources and their Missouri counterpart are investigating the totality of damage and wildlife loss as not only are the fish dying, frogs, earthworms , snakes and mussels are among the casualties. The impact this environmental disaster will have on drinking water has not yet been assessed as only Kansas City draws from the Nishnabotna river and its 100 miles downstream.
