Missouri lawmakers returned to the Capitol this week.with a long list of policy priorities still in play and only eight weeks to get it all done before the legislative session ends in May. Disagreements between the Senate leadership and members of the Freedom Caucus continue to fuel the gridlock we have been experiencing over the last 3 years. Two of the top issues lawmakers must handle before the summer adjournment are to pass the state’s $50 billion dollar budget and renew the $4 billion bill that is vital to the state’s Medicaid program.
Nodaway County residents are being warned by the Sheriff’s Department to be extra vigilant for late night prowlers and theft of property. Several incidents have been reported recently prompting the notice. Residents are reminded to not leave loaded weapons in unlocked cars, be sure to lock your vehicle and homes. Officials also warn residents that if you hear a knock on your door late at night to call them first, do not answer the door.
A group called the conservative caucus before rebranding as the Freedom Caucus after 2022 that has brought about infighting within the party leaving some caucus members relieved of their committee chairmanships and even their capital parking privileges. Is expected to be used as a campaign strategy for any newcomer challenging a Republican incumbent. The Freedom caucus is responsible for bringing about filibusters that prolonged the approval of a new congressional district map and forcing a special session addressing Medicaid funding. In the Missouri House all the seats are up for election . In 2022 69 of the 163 districts where contested in 2024 election cycle 114 districts will be challenged, across the Capitol in the Missouri House, where all the seats are on the ballot, there is a big increase in contested seats compared to two years ago. In the 2022 election, only 69 of 163 districts had both Republican and Democratic candidates. This year, the major parties will both field candidates in 114 districts.
