A shifting climate and groundwater pumping has left many states facing drought scenarios and looking for solutions. With the Missouri River running through the middle of our state and the Mississippi on our eastern side as well as the Osage River that feeds the Lake of the Ozarks, Missouri is home to reliable freshwater systems that could make us a resource. Lawmakers in Jefferson City are working to get legislation in place that would make it difficult for those states to tap into our natural resources. The proposed legislation would prohibit exporting water from Missouri unless authorized by the Missouri Department of Natural Resources. It’s backed by Missouri agricultural and environmental groups and has received support from Republican and Democratic legislators alike.
